AKLAS Comics: A Visionary Blend of Art, Protest, and FilipinX Futurism

AKLAS Comics, a revolutionary anthology series, redefines visual storytelling in the world of Mega Manila, 2048. Created by Harvey Nichol and Daniele Pieroni, with captivating illustrations by Nheil Cayetano, it’s a bold fusion of visual arts, literature, and political commentary. Set against a backdrop of climate change, government corruption, and corporate influence, AKLAS subverts traditional Cyberpunk tropes, offering a fresh perspective on FilipinX futurism.
The series is an immersive journey into societal complexities and environmental uncertainties, extending its artistic reach beyond comic books to graphic novels, paintings, sculptures, and a concept art book. The first issue, launched in September 2023, marks the beginning of a five-part saga that’s not just a narrative but a movement, intertwining art with protest to reflect the authentic FilipinX experience.
Adding to its innovative storytelling, the AKLAS team, led by Nichol, is creating a motion comic version, with voice contributions and an original soundtrack by the multi-talented Rubix. This adaptation promises a dynamic new experience of the AKLAS universe. Highlighting their creative process, the team screened a ‘making of’ documentary during a showcase event in December, offering an insider’s view into the passionate drive behind AKLAS.
