Cebuano Artist Bastinuod Integrates Filipino Culture with Global Icons

Bastinuod, a visual pop-artist from Cebu, has gained recognition for blending comic book aesthetics with Filipino cultural motifs. His works merge modern and indigenous themes, earning him a notable position in the Philippine art scene, especially in Cebu City.
In a 2020 interview with Clavel Magazine during the Enhanced Community Quarantine, Bastinuod discussed his creative process and how the pandemic impacted his projects. Stationed at Asylum de Busay, a combined artist studio and gallery in Busay, Cebu City, he shared thoughts on the evolving themes in art due to the pandemic. His vibrant pop-art style addresses contemporary issues while encouraging viewers to engage deeply with his pieces.
In addition to his local influence, Bastinuod participated in the #GhibliDraw trend in February 2021, reported by Complex Philippines. He reimagined the bathhouse from “Spirited Away” as a Bahay Kubo, integrating Filipino elements into the globally recognized Studio Ghibli scene. This effort is part of a larger series where he adapted other Ghibli films, infusing them with local culture, including a depiction of the Philippine Tarsier in his version of “My Neighbor Totoro.”
Furthermore, Bastinuod has also created a series of artworks based on the popular anime “One Piece,” which have been well-received for their unique incorporation of Filipino elements into the beloved series. This work showcases his ability to blend popular global media with local cultural narratives, furthering his exploration of cultural identity through art.
Bastinuod’s ongoing projects continue to highlight the richness of Filipino culture through international frameworks, demonstrating how local and global contexts can coalesce to create meaningful and engaging art. His work not only bridges traditional and contemporary but also serves as a platform for cultural education and appreciation.
