Canada Opens Visa-Free Travel to Qualified Filipinos: Here’s What You Need to Know

Recent social media buzz has renewed excitement over Canada’s visa-free travel option for some Filipinos. While this policy has been in effect since June 2023, it is gaining attention again as more travelers meet the eligibility criteria.

Eligible Philippine passport holders may visit Canada without a traditional visitor visa by applying for a $7 CAD Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). The process is fast, simple, and typically approved within minutes.

Who Is Eligible?

  • The eTA option is available only to Filipino citizens who have either:
  • A valid U.S. non-immigrant visa, or
  • A Canadian visitor visa issued within the past 10 years.

Those who do not meet these requirements must still apply for a standard Canadian Visitor Visa through IRCC.

What Is an eTA?

An Electronic Travel Authorization is a digital entry requirement for visa-exempt travelers arriving in Canada by air. It is linked to the traveler’s passport and is generally valid for up to five years or until the passport expires. Entry is still assessed by Canadian border officers upon arrival.

The Philippines was one of 13 countries added to Canada’s eTA eligibility in 2023, along with Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Costa Rica, Morocco, Panama, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay.

According to the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, the move “manifests Canada’s growing engagement and interest in the Philippines. It is a recognition that the Filipino community has contributed to its diversity and dynamism.”
